Matching Riders with Bikes

Your driving license determines which motorcycles you can legally operate. Here's a simplified guide:

  • Licenses issued before 1 February 2001: You can ride a moped (up to 50cc) without L plates or CBT. Your license should show Category P. For larger bikes, CBT is mandatory.
  • Licenses issued after 1 February 2001: A CBT course is required before riding any moped or motorcycle, regardless of size.

License Categories Explained

  • AM License: For 16+ riders. Permits operation of mopeds and scooters up to 50cc and 4kW. No L plates needed.
  • A1 License: Allows riding motorcycles up to 125cc (11kW max). Ideal for urban commuting without L plates.
  • A2 License: For 19+ riders. Enables riding motorcycles up to 35kW (47bhp). Obtainable after two years on A1 or via Direct Access and CBT.
  • A License: Unrestricted motorcycle license. Available after two years on A2 (at 21+) or via Direct Access at 24+. Permits riding any motorcycle, regardless of engine capacity.
